10% of the Earth's inhabitants are starving, while people throw away 17% of all food

This is stated in the report on the disposal of food in the world presented by the UN program from the environment.

It follows that 17% of all foods on earth, suitable for use, are sent to garbage. At the same time, 783 million people live in a state of constant famine in the world. This is almost 10% of the planet's population.

On average, every inhabitant of the Earth throws about 79 kilograms of food, which he was not useful. The average US resident throws 115 kg of "extra" food, European - 65 kg, Russian - 56 kg. The total amount of food debris in 2022 was 1.05 billion tons. This is about 1 billion servings of food a day.

Most of the products - 60% - throw out individual consumers and households. About 28% are a share of catering, 12% remain unclaimed in retail stores and supermarkets.

The UN emphasize that "extra" products are thrown not only in rich countries. Food garbage per family in high, medium and low income countries differs no more than 10%.
