President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his readiness for the presidential elections even in the war period, if the necessary changes in the legislation and the conditions of voting were made.
In an interview with the British channel Channel 4 News, he noted that it is necessary to consider the possibility of changing laws and circumstances if it helps to organize the election.
"Here is my answer: if I could do it tomorrow I would do it tomorrow ... We need to change circumstances and law," Zelensky , answering questions about the possibility of elections that should take place in the spring of this year.
The President stressed that the decision to postpone elections is made in accordance with the law and not with his personal desires. The law prohibits elections during martial law.
"I am simply not able to conduct them through the law that forbids me. That is, it forbids me not to hold elections, but forbids elections as a whole to all institutions," Zelensky explained.
The President also pointed out the problems of holding elections in the occupied territories and for Ukrainians abroad, as the lack of online election format is a challenge.
In November 2023, the Central Election Commission of Ukraine announced that it did not receive information on the possibility of preparation for the presidential elections in March 2024, and according to the Constitution, no elections during martial law were not held.
