In 2023, abortion became the leading cause of death in the world, surpassing even infectious diseases and cancer.
Last year, abortion surpassed other important causes of death, such as infectious diseases and cancer, to become the leading cause of death. According to statistics, infectious diseases caused more than 12.9 million deaths, while more than 8.2 million people died from cancer. Smoking and alcohol caused more than 4.9 million and more than 2.4 million deaths, respectively.
HIV/AIDS (over 1.6 million) and traffic accidents (over 1.3 million) also caused a significant number of deaths. Suicides claimed the lives of more than a million people. Other causes, such as influenza, malaria and complications during childbirth, also led to thousands of deaths.
According to Worldometer, the total number of deaths in 2023 was more than 60.6 million. However, if abortions were counted as deaths, the figure would exceed the 100 million mark, with abortions alone accounting for over 40%.
Despite numerous state-level abortion restrictions in the US following the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade, the number of abortions in 2023 remained roughly the same as in 2022.
