US Presidential Administration Donald Trump considers the possibility of reforming the World Health Organization (WHO), in particular, a possible nomination of the American candidate for its head after 2027, when the term of office of the current head of the organization Tedros Adkhanomoma Hebreessus will be completed.
The journalists' document contains a recommendation to quickly announce the US withdrawal with WHO and introduce a new format for interaction with the organization. Among the proposed changes is the creation of a special US envoy in 2025 for WHO talks. This person will directly report to President Trump and the White House, coordinating cooperation with the international structure.
According to sources, although this proposal was discussed before Trump's inauguration, it is unknown whether it will be officially approved by the administration.
The US is one of the key financial donors of WHO, providing about 18% of the overall budget of the organization. Washington's exit from organizing or changes in the structure of cooperation can significantly affect WHO activities and its global health initiatives.
The WHO reform is not the first time the subject of discussion in Washington. During the first presidential term, Trump sharply criticized the organization, accusing it of inefficiency and dependence on China, and temporarily stopped funding. The administration is now returning to this issue, considering possible ways to reform the international health care system.
