Israeli archaeologists revealed the secrets of the monastery and the farm house of the Byzantine era

Archaeologists in Israel have made an important opening in the Negev Desert, where they found a well -preserved monastery complex and a farm house dating from the Byzantine Empire. These findings provide a unique opportunity to study the lives of monks and farmers in the south of Israel more than 1400 years ago.

Archaeological excavations, headed by Nir-Schimshon Parans on the Management of Antiquities of Israel, were discovered by a monastery complex that existed between the VI and the beginning of the VII century AD. The monastery included a chapel, a kitchen, a dining room, a outbuilding and a winemaker. These objects are well preserved and provide valuable information about the daily life of the monks in the Byzantium era.

One of the most significant finds is the mosaic with the Malta Cross and the inscription in Greek, containing the names of four monks. Also on the floor of the chapel were found clay vessels, dated 460 AD, as well as two tombs, one of which had a engraved cross. Liturgical objects, such as lamps, chains and a pillar, which was probably part of the altar screen, are also well preserved.

Excavations have shown that the monks were actively engaged in everyday activities. The structure of the monastery cuisine allows the researchers to imagine the life of the residents of the monastery. The thick ash layer indicates that the stove has been used for a long time. The floor also found the basis of the vessel, probably for a primitive oven.

Another interesting find was the detection of a large winemaker and a plastered pit for winemaking, which indicates that the monks were engaged in the production of wine. The stored wine storage tank suggests that it was an important element of their activity.

Near the monastery, archaeologists found a farm house that has a rectangular guard tower and a small window. The coin found on the floor confirms that this building was built in the first half of the VI century.

This discovery allows you to better understand how the monks of the Byzantine era conducted an economy, organized life and interacted with the environment. In addition, archaeologists have received valuable evidence of socio-economic aspects of life during this period, as well as the ability to investigate the changes that took place in the region during large migration and changes.

The finding of the monastery and the farm house of Byzantium is an important stage in archaeological studies of Israel. It gives a deep understanding of the history and culture of the region during the Byzantine Empire, and is a testament to how the monasteries influenced the development of agriculture and daily life in the Negev Desert.
