In the light of the current political situation and Ukraine's needs to ensure its own defense capability, the former commander of the US forces in Europe, retired lieutenant general Ben Godges, expressed his strong opinion on the need to expand the production of ammunition in Ukraine.
In his VOA interview, Godges expressed some frustration with the West, asking, "What have you been doing since 2014?" and noted that Ukraine should actively increase its ammunition production.
The general identified certain companies that express the intention to produce things in Ukraine, but he believes that this is not enough. He urged Ukraine to use its production capacity and increase production, stressing the importance of political will to achieve this goal.
Godges gave an example from history, noting that German aircraft production during World War II reached its peak when Germany was already being bombed by the Allies. He argues that ammunition production is a reflection of political will and an important aspect in strengthening defense capabilities.
