The Czech Republic considers the possibility of creating its Ukrainian legion, following the example of Poland, according to local media. The idea becomes relevant against the backdrop of the continuation of the Russian-Ukrainian war and the active support of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with Western partners.
Kyiv Independent writes about it.
The Ukrainian Legion was presented early this month as a volunteer military unit consisting of Ukrainian men who live in Poland and have been trained in the country's armed forces.
"The Czech Ministry is gathers information from the Polish side to create a so -called Ukrainian legion," Idnes.cz reports, citing a representative of the David Polak Ministry.
According to him, as soon as the necessary data can be collected, the possibility of participation of Poland will be considered.
It is unclear whether the Czech Republic involves the creation of a similar unit in the country, or assistance in creating a legion in Poland.
According to the Czech Ministry of Defense, more than 4,000 Ukrainian servicemen in 2023 were trained in the country.
Czech Defense Minister Yana Chernohova reported that such a plan can help Ukrainian men in the country to participate in the protection of their homeland.
"Many citizens want to help their country, but do not want to return to Ukraine because they do not know what to expect," she told CT24 reporters.
There are approximately 570,000 Ukrainian citizens in the Czech Republic, among other things, about 380,000 received refugees.
Ukrainian Legion in Poland
About a million Ukrainians live in Poland. The creation of the armed unit was announced as part of the security agreement signed between Ukraine and Poland on July 8.
The recruitment to the Legion will hold Ukrainian consulates. Volunteers will be called out in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine and teach local instructors in Poland. As of July 11, "several thousand" people registered in the Legion, said the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry Radoslav Sikorsky.
It should be reminded that on July 11, Radoslav Sikorsky stated that in Poland thousands of citizens seek to enroll in the Ukrainian Legion.
