The German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, openly stated the need to strengthen Europe and reduce the US dependence. The idea was supported by French President Emmanuel Macron, who called for "strategic autonomy" of Europe.
This initiative can become the most ambitious project in the EU military sphere over the last decades. However, it requires huge resources and a long time for implementation. Europe has enough fighters and transport aircraft, but it lacks reconnaissance drones, reconnaissance aircraft and air tankers to refuel combat vehicles. In 2023, there were less than 250 ISR reconnaissance aircraft in the EU, while in the United States-more than 1000. The number of European filling aircraft is 150 and almost 500 in the United States. The US has 5,200 out of 7,500 large satellites, including intelligence, communication, communication and GPS. The whole of Europe together has only 1,600 satellites. Most aircraft to suppress enemy air defense are the US. European countries need to modify their fighters to ensure effective work against Russian air defense systems. NATO European countries have almost 80 combat brigades - more than in the US. The total number of fighters, ships and submarines in Europe is or exceeds Russian potential. However, Europe is too much in the United States on intelligence, satellite and air support.
What is needed for Europe's strategic autonomy? Create more specialized aircraft for reconnaissance, refueling and supply. Expand the satellite group to not depend on American technologies. To upgrade combat aviation and teach pilots to work in a modern conflict.
Despite the bold statements of Merz and Macron, Europe is not yet ready for self -safety. However, if the initiative is implemented, it will be the largest military transformation in EU history.
