Why Macron avoids calls to Putin

French President Emmanuel Macron said he does not plan to call Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the war against Ukraine unless there is an "appropriate context". The French leader emphasized that the Russian Federation is currently showing unwillingness to stop hostilities and comply with international law.

According to Macron, Putin's statements about the possibility of negotiations are not confirmed by real actions.

He does not rule out the possibility of a conversation with the Russian president in the future, but only on the condition that this will contribute to real progress towards peace based on respect for international law.

This statement of the French leader was a response to a recent telephone conversation between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Vladimir Putin. We will remind that on November 15, Scholz called the Russian leader for the first time in almost two years. The chancellor said that this was done in order to dispel the Kremlin's illusions about the West's possible refusal to support Ukraine.

Despite Sholtz's call for negotiations, his call drew criticism from some Ukrainian and international representatives who consider such initiatives untimely.

Macron emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. France, as before, is ready to help Ukraine, including military and humanitarian aid.

Such a position is part of a broader strategy of Western countries that have united to support Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression.
