Where the ticks live and when they are the most active

With the onset of spring, along with the sun and fresh greenery, we are chatted and less pleasant guests - ticks. These tiny parasites have been activated since the end of March and remain dangerous for the first frost. Particularly vulnerable to their bites are our four -legged friends - dogs and cats. Despite the common myth, the ticks do not live on the trees and do not jump on the sacrifice from above. They live in moist and shaded places - in tall grass, bushes, forest strips, parks, cottages and even in city lawns. Usually they do not rise higher than one and a half meters, wait for someone to pass and touch them.

The peak of tick activity occurs in April - June, but the danger lasts almost all year long. Therefore, going for a walk with a dog or releasing a cat to the yard, you should not lose vigilance. The main threat is not the bite itself, but the diseases that the tick can tolerate. One of the most dangerous is pyroplasmosis (babesiosis). It affects the blood cells of the animal and can end in death without treatment.

  • Sudden rise in body temperature.

  • Urine is dark, sometimes almost black.

  • Laying, weakness, shortness of breath.

  • Vomiting, diarrhea, rejection of food.

If you notice these symptoms in your animal, do not delay and consult a veterinarian immediately. The sooner you start treatment, the more likely it is for full recovery.

If the tick is not soaked - carefully remove it, avoiding crushing and destroying it. The morning should be disinfected.

If the tick is sucked, carefully twist it (use tweezers or a special hook), do not pull. Treat the bite with an antiseptic and watch the animal carefully for several days.

Please note: not all ticks are infected, but it is better to be alert.

Fortunately, modern veterinary medicine offers many effective means that will help to avoid infection:

  • Drops on the withers - easy to use, operate up to 4 weeks.

  • Tick ​​collars are convenient for long-term protection (up to 6-8 months).

  • Sprays are effective for short -term use, such as before going to the forest.

  • Tablets - operate systematically, providing protection from the inside.

Consult with a veterinarian which option will be the best for your pet, given his breed, weight and health.

  • After each walk, carefully inspect the wool and skin of the animal, especially in the area of ​​the ears, neck, armpit, abdomen.

  • Keep the lawn in the yard short.

  • Avoid walking in high grass, especially during the period of ticks.
