Ukrainian demographers are also sounding the alarm. For example, Oleksandr Gladun, deputy director of the Ukrainian State Institute of Demography and Quality of Life Problems, warns that refugees will be reluctantly returned to Europe after the war. "The demographic situation in modern Europe is also not very good, so they are interested in Ukrainians. And, most likely, most countries will have a policy aimed at leaving them, given the current active actions for their adaptation," said the demographer.
At the same time, demographers emphasize that the Ukrainian population, in particular the young, has actually been eliminated. The birth rate in the country fell quite sharply - last year it was 31.5% lower than in pre-war 2021, and 9% lower than the year before last. Such a trend may lead to the fact that in 2035-2037 the share of the population under the age of 18 will be 12-15 percent, compared to 25 percent recorded in 1993. And this means that with their transition to reproductive age, even fewer children will be born in the next generation. Accordingly, in the next - even less, etc.
