In Georgia, the presidential elections were held, where former football player Michael Kavalashvili won. A new head of state was elected by the election panel, where the majority of votes belongs to the pro -Russian party "Georgian Dream".
The cavelashvili, nominated by the same party, became the only candidate for the post of president. During the vote, he received 224 votes and one ballot was spoiled. The inauguration of the newly elected President is scheduled for December 29.
These elections have become historical, because for the first time the president was elected not by citizens of the country, but by members of the election panel. This format of voting has caused a lot of disputes, because the control of the panel actually belongs to the "Georgian Dream".
Michael Kavalashvili is a politician known in Georgia and one of the leaders of the formally separated group "Power of the People". He was twice elected to the Georgia Parliament - in the IX and X convocations, and in the last election on October 26 he again became a deputy, entering the list of "Georgian Dream" at number 18.
Kaelashvili has gained popularity as a professional football player. He advocated Tbilisi Lokomotiv, Russian Spartacus Alanya, the English Manchester City and several Swiss clubs. He was also a player in Georgia national team.
The appointment of a cavelashvili president causes an ambiguous reaction in society. For many, his sports career is a source of pride, but the role of the Georgian Dream and its pro -Russian sentiment are of concern to the opposition and the international community.
