The expert explained why Ukrainian doctors do not change gloves after each patient

In Ukraine and Western countries, the approach to the use of medical gloves is significantly different. If in Ukraine the focus is on the protection of physicians, then in Europe and other Western countries the main protection of the patient. This was told by Elena Moshinets, Candidate of Biological Sciences and Senior Researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the NAS of Ukraine in an interview with Glavcom.

Moshinets explains that in Ukraine, doctors often use gloves as a means of protection for themselves, not always changing them after each patient. This leads to the fact that doctors can tolerate infections from one patient to another. In Western countries, instead, the doctor is obliged to change gloves in front of each new patient to protect him from possible hospital infections.

“Medical workers believe that gloves are for their protection. While in the west, gloves are something that protects the patient from the hospital environment, ”the microbiologist notes.

According to Moshinets, in European hospitals there is a very strict infectious control, including regular sterilization, change of equipment and constant monitoring of infections. However, in Ukraine, the need for such control is often ignored. This, in her opinion, is one of the reasons for the spread of dangerous hospital infections that patients may suffer.

The situation becomes even more difficult because there are strains of bacteria in Ukraine, resistant to most antibiotics, including the new drugs used in Europe. Moshinets warns that Ukrainian strains have already "broken" one of the latest and strongest antibiotics - Cefiderol. This is a fear in European hospitals that avoid receiving Ukrainian patients because of the risk of spreading these dangerous bacteria.
