Martin Helme, a member of the Estonian Parliament and the leader of the Conservative People's Party (EKRE), caused widespread indignation with his statement about the eviction of Ukrainian refugees who speak Russian. This happened in the context of his proposal for a significant reduction in financial assistance that Estonia provides Ukraine under Russian aggression.
"They can call themselves Ukrainians, and most of them are native to Eastern Ukraine, which is a zone of fighting, but they speak Russian and very much of them repeats Putin's narratives. The fact is that the Kai Callas government has spent two years a larger Russification than Karlu Wypia, Josipus.
He urged the power of Estonia to give up the reception of refugees at all: "We are not concerned about Brussels, we keep others from the outside, and ours ours inside."
Helme also called for twice the amount that is thrown into Ukraine's corruption. "
"If we do these simple things, there will be money for the state defense and it will still be possible to reduce taxes quietly," said Ekre leader.
In the 2019 parliamentary elections, the party gained 17.8% of votes and received 19 seats. In the recent elections to the European Parliament, it took fourth place and will receive one mandate.
