The European Parliament is considering depriving Georgia of the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union

MEP Viola von Cramon has called for the termination of Georgia's EU membership candidate status due to the authorities' use of violence against protesters in the Georgian capital. She announced this on her Twitter.

According to von Kramon, violence against protesters requires concrete consequences. She offered the following:

  • Stop funding projects for Georgia;
  • Introduce sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party;
  • Ban entry to the European Union to deputies who supported the draft law on "foreign agents".

On Wednesday, May 1, the Parliament of Georgia continued the consideration of the draft law on foreign agents in the second reading, which caused a wave of protests in the country. During the discussion in the Georgian parliament, a mass fight took place, after which the consideration of the issue was suspended.

The evening before, on April 30, more than 15,000 people came to a rally against the law on foreign agents in Tbilisi. After the march of the protesters to the parliament, they were severely beaten by the special forces - tear gas, water cannons and special equipment were used against the protest participants.
