In Taiwan, a presidential candidate from the Democratic Progressive Party (PPP) and the favorite of the races, Lai Chint, announced that in the event of victory he would not declare the independence of the island from China. He made this statement at a press conference in Taipei, four days before the election.
Lai expressed his belief that the victory of the PPP would allow Beijing's policy towards Taiwan, emphasizing that this would be a signal of full support for Taiwan's policies of the current authorities to govern the island independently.
Noting that his election would contribute to stability in the Indo-Pacific region, Lai also declared the preservation of friendship to Beijing. He emphasized his dedication status quo in trade relations and interaction with China.
The politician has identified four key points of his plan, including Taiwan's defense and economic security, expanding his partnership with other democracies and maintaining pragmatic relations with China. At the same time, he called on both parties to the dialogue, emphasizing that the maintenance of the status of both parties to the Taiwan Strait.
