Finland Prime Minister Peter Orpo commented on the border closing with Russia, saying that the border or individual border posts could not be opened before reaching an agreement with Russia. According to him, this decision actually means that Russia will no longer miss migrants without the necessary travel documents, even if the border points are opened.
Orpo commented to journalists at Saariselky, where the summit of EU leaders takes place. He noted that, on the basis of available information, Russia will continue to pass migrants through border points if they are open. This indicates that the issue of security and control at the borders remains important for the Finnish authorities.
In this context, it is worth mentioning that at the beginning of the year, the Ministers of Defense of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania approved the plan for the creation of a common Baltic defense zone on the eastern border. This plan is aimed at enhancing the safety of countries bordering Russia and Belarus. Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia also called on the European Union to build a defensive line along the border with Russia and Belarus, which emphasizes the relevance of strengthening defense measures in the region.
