On July 1, 2025, new labor norms aimed at protecting workers who are forced to work in the conditions of abnormal heat will come into force in France. The corresponding decree of the Ministry of Labor was published in the official government's governing bulletin and aims to adapt the working conditions to the realities of climatic changes.
The new provisions will supplement the French Labor Code with specific requirements for employers for the organization of work in the hot period. Among the main innovations: adaptation of work schedule, employers should change the work schedule to avoid the hottest hours of the day. Suspension of heavy work: during periods of excessive heat of physically difficult tasks should be temporarily stopped. Organization of breaks: The break system for employees will be changed - with the possibility of more frequent or longer rest in the shade or cooled room. Sun and heat protection: in the workplace there should be means to reduce the effects of solar radiation and heat - in particular, blinds, ventilation, diffusers. Water access: workers must have guaranteed access to drinking water, as well as special protective equipment, if needed working conditions. These measures are a response to the increase in the frequency and intensity of heat waves in Europe. The French government thus recognizes the need to strengthen workplace safety measures in climate change.
The adopted norms emphasize that the health of workers should be a priority, especially during periods of extreme temperatures. Experts believe that such reforms can be an example for other EU countries.
