France increases Europe's nuclear readiness

France suggested that Europe create a "nuclear shield", saying that it was ready to use nuclear restraint to protect the continent. This became known on February 25, when The Telegraph reported the possibility of deployment of French nuclear fighter jets in Germany to strengthen Europe's safety against the background of threats from the United States, which can remove its nuclear forces from Europe.

The idea of strengthening European nuclear security was recently expressed by Friedrich Merz, a probable successor in German Chancellor, who called on the United Kingdom and France to take more responsibility for Europe's defense, reducing US dependence. Merz tries to create an independent European nuclear strategy against the background of a possible withdrawal of US military forces, which is related to the administration of President Donald Trump.

The French diplomat, which remained unnamed, pointed to the importance of this step as a signal for Russia and the possibility of pressure on Britain. In particular, the placement of French nuclear fighters in Germany should increase national security and show France's determination to defend Europe.

Instead, a diplomat in Berlin noted that such a proposal could show considerable pressure on the UK to also contribute to Europe's security. However, he said, there may be no official request for such deployment unless the US decides to withdraw its nuclear forces from Eastern Europe.

The United States has for a long time guarantee Europe's safety, placing about 100 nuclear missiles on its continent, in particular on Germany.
