The transit of Russian natural gas is stopped by the territory of Ukraine. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine on Wednesday, January 1.
"At 07:00 in the interests of national security, the transportation of Russian natural gas was stopped by the territory of Ukraine. Ukraine in accordance with the established procedure informed international partners about it," - said in the Ministry.
It is noted that from this day the gas transport system of Ukraine operates in the absence of transit of Russian gas. The infrastructure of the system was prepared in advance for operation in zero transit conditions, providing reliable gas supply to Ukrainian consumers.
"We have stopped the Russian gas transit is a historical event. Russia is losing markets and will bear financial loss. Europe has already made a decision to abandon Russian gas, and the RePower EU initiative provides exactly what Ukraine has done today," said Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko.
The Russian side also confirmed the termination of transit. According to Gazprom representatives, the relevant agreement ended on January 1, 2025.
"In connection with the repeated and pronounced refusal of the Ukrainian side to continue this agreement, Gazprom was deprived of technical and legal ability to submit gas for transit through the territory of Ukraine from January 1, 2025.
