The head of the EU Military Committee, General Robert Brieger, believed that reaching a ceasefire in Ukraine is possible through the creation of an international mission under the mandate of the UN. In an interview with Welt, he said that European Union countries can provide considerable forces to control the ceasefire, but a significant military presence will be required to effectively oversee the demilitarized zone.
Brigher stressed that in order to ensure a long peace and to prevent conflict recovery, the mission must have a powerful mandate, with the possibility of using force if necessary. According to him, the political will of the participating states will be a decisive factor in the equipping of such forces.
The general also expressed doubt about the US President Donald Trump's plan to freeze the front line, saying that this approach may lead to a conflict and will not bring stability in the region.
