71-year-old Navaf Salam, Head of the UN International Court of Justice in the Hague, was elected Prime Minister Lebanon. About it reports BBC .
Two -thirds of the 128 members of the Lebanon Parliament supported his candidacy, while the current Provisional Prime Minister of Nadzhib Mikati received only nine votes. Salam is expected to return to Lebanon today.
The appointment of Salama was a significant defeat for the Shiite Organization of Hezbolla , which supported Micati's reassignment but did not put forward another candidate. Hezbolla's positions weakened because of a recent war with Israel, which further influenced the political balance in the country.
Naviaf Salam comes from a well -known Sunni family from Beirut, which has a significant impact in Lebanon's political life. His uncle participated in the struggle for the country's independence from France and several times held the post of prime minister. Salama's cousin, Tammam, headed the Lebanon government from 2014 to 2016.
Salam has many years of experience in the legal and diplomatic spheres. Earlier, he worked as a permanent representative of Lebanon at the United Nations (2007–2017) and was elected a member of the UN International Court of Justice in 2018. In February 2022 he was appointed president of this court.
His activities in the Hague coincided with the consideration of resonant international affairs, including the accusations of South Africa against Israel against genocide in the Gaza Sector.
