NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed optimism on Friday about the possibility that Sweden could join a military organization by March, receiving positive signals from Hungary and Turkey during this week.
After Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sweden and its neighbor Finland postponed decades of military neutrality, seeking protection against NATO's collective defense. Finland has already joined, and now Sweden, together with the other 30 allies, must obtain approval for its annexation.
Stoltenberg noted that "Sweden's introduction to NATO will make the whole alliance stronger", giving the details of negotiations this week with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and marking new development in Turkey.
