NATO's refusal to join the Alliance at the nearest summit has caused various speculations. The main idea is an attempt to leave the field for maneuver in future negotiations and trading with the Russians.
During the Stoltenberg's visit, attention is drawn to the fact that Ukraine will not receive an invitation to NATO at the future summit in Washington. The promise of a fund for more than $ 100 billion for 5 years was also discussed to financing weapons of Ukraine, as well as the recognition by NATO Secretary General that assistance from the Alliance for Ukraine was not timely, which undermined trust.
The argument for the refusal to invite is that the Alliance States are afraid that this can lead to open military confrontation with Russian aggressors. However, this argument is criticized as the NATO accession process may take years, and all this time the Alliance will have nothing to do with the war in Ukraine.
It should also be noted that the problem is not in Ukraine's membership in NATO. For example, Israel is not a member of the Alliance, but it is protected by the United States. However, the American strategy from the beginning of the war in Ukraine is to act so that the Russians are "tired" of war and agreed to any "settlement".
However, for the Russian leadership, this war is not just colonial, but fundamental, existential, so it requires unpredictable casualties and expenses. To convince that such a war is "unprofitable" and it is better to keep resources unpromising. Thus, while the Western partners of Ukraine hesitated and reflected, the Russians consolidated their resources for aggression.
While the West and the US were looking for ways to "keep the balance", the Russians began to reject this balance in their favor because they had no restrictions. There were also political problems in Western democracies, where any issue can be the subject of discussion, which also affected the situation. Instead of the promised "equal and leisurely" support, the Ukrainians received a six -year failure in the supply of ammunition and other necessary components, and instead of the fatigue of Russians, the threat of new aggression.
The idea of $ 100 billion from NATO was an attempt to avoid political problems and maintain Ukraine support scheme, but this only continues the old unsuccessful model. An attempt to "keep a balance" between the Great Russian Neo -imperia and Ukraine requires considerable resources from NATO, and this cannot be inappropriate. Maybe it's time to give up all these red lines and try to focus resources?
In any case, NATO membership is not a direct discussion topic. NATO has completely different tasks, and this is not about us yet.
