Greece paves the way for legalization of same-sex marriage and adoption

Greek Prime Minister Kiriakos Michotakis has confirmed his intention to legalize same-sex marriages and allow the same-sex couples to adopt children. He announced it on January 10 during a speech on the ERT.

Michotakis stressed that legislative initiatives on these issues will not be revolutionary because they already exist in many European countries. However, he also noted that "a single man will not be able to have a baby from a surrogate mother."

The Prime Minister confirmed that he would not press his New Democracy party to vote for these initiatives, but would try to find a compromise in Greek society, where the Orthodox Church has a great influence.

Michotakis expressed respect for different views of citizens and the position of the church, noting that historically the state and the church did not always share the same views, pointing out the example of civil marriage and cremation.

The legislative project on same -sex marriages and adoption of same -sex couples will be submitted for public discussion before its adoption. It should be reminded that, as in most EU countries, Greece recognizes civil partnerships, and the Kharotakis Government has already accepted a number of reforms, including the abolition of restrictions on blood donation to homosexuals and the termination of the practice of "gender normalization operations" in Interssex.
