SpaceX, under the leadership of Ilon Mask, takes another step towards the realization of an ambitious dream - the creation of the city of Starbase in Texas. The company's employees have officially submitted a petition for the founding of the city where the first mayor may be SpaceX Safety Manager Gunnar Milburn. About it reports The New York Times .
Starbase is planned to be positioned on the coast of Southern Texas, not far from SpaceX's starting platform. The proposed area of the city is 4 square kilometers, where about 500 residents already live, most of whom work in SpaceX. Residents live in companies and use developed infrastructure, including restaurants, open only to employees.
- Infrastructure expansion. The city will allow to create municipal services, including water supply, utilities management, as well as its own fire and police services.
- Obtaining funding. Starbase incorporation will provide access to state and federal grants.
- Legal advantages. As a city, Starbase will receive some immunity from lawsuits and the right to confiscate property as needed.
- Unique management format. The vast majority of city residents work in SpaceX, which creates a precedent for city management as part of a corporate structure.
- Legal obstacles. In Texas, the creation of a new city requires strict requirements, including the number of residents and the support of voters. Currently, the petition is being checked by the Cameron County.
- Ecological opposition. Locals and environmental organizations oppose the impact of SpaceX launches on the environment.
- The reaction of society. The creation of a corporate city raises the question of the company's influence on residents and their independence.
If the district officials approve the petition, the next step will be the elections where the residents will be able to choose the first representatives of local authorities. Successful creation of Starbase can be a model for future corporate cities in the world.
