India has rapidly moved to the forefront of supplying critical technologies to Russia, including microchips, microcircuits and machine tools, Bloomberg , citing statements by American and European officials. According to the publication, Indian exports of these sanctioned technologies to Russia in April and May 2024 exceeded $60 million, which was almost a double increase compared to the previous months. In July, this indicator reached 95 million dollars. Currently, only China is ahead of India in terms of supplies to Russia.
Technology Supply Network across India
A significant part of dual-purpose technologies, including those used in the military-industrial complex, comes to Russia precisely through third countries, since the export of many goods directly to Russia is prohibited. This forces Russia to look for alternative ways, cooperating with countries such as India, which has become an important supplier in this chain.
According to the latest data, almost a fifth of all secret technologies used for military purposes reach Russia precisely through India. Such cooperation became possible thanks to the large amount of accumulated rupees from the sale of oil, which contributes to the development of economic relations between the countries, even in spite of Western sanctions.
Western sanctions and increased surveillance
India, Malaysia and Thailand are gradually becoming new centers for the supply of sanctioned goods after Western countries began to block the traditional routes through Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. This situation attracted the attention of US and EU sanctions authorities. In July, US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo warned Indian companies about the risks of continued cooperation with the Russian military-industrial complex. He sent an official letter to Indian industry leaders highlighting the threat of sanctions against Indian companies and banks that continue to do business with Russia.
Western allies are trying to limit such trade routes, but India's growing trade with Russia suggests that this cooperation could continue, especially amid economic benefits for both countries.
