The enormous squid, which is the most difficult type of invertebrate on the planet, was first recorded in the wild. This event has become a real scientific breakthrough, because by this time squid was only described on the basis of fragments found in the stomachs of sperm whales, and occasionally - living individuals that accidentally fell into the nets of fishermen.
Scientists at the Non -Commercial Institute of Schmidt Ocean Institute have given a unique opportunity to fix a living enormous squid using the submarine remotely controlled Subastian chamber. It happened during an expedition that lasted 35 days near the South Sandwich Islands. The camera was installed on the Falkor (Too) research vessel and this giant of the marine depths was recorded at a depth of 600 meters.
The enormous squid, known to the scientist since 1925, was rather a myth than a real object of study. However, in 1981, fishermen near Antarctica raised a living representative of this species on board, which became the first acquaintance with the squid in its live form. But to this expedition, no one saw a tremendous squid in his natural environment.
This discovery is an important step for science, as it will help to better understand the behavior and ecology of this mysterious species, which still remained one of the largest and least studied inhabitants of the ocean depths.
