The Trinity is one of the greatest and most revered holidays in the Christian tradition, which is also known as green holidays. This holiday symbolizes the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, opening a new era - the birth of the Church of Christ.
In 2025, Easter became a special event, as the Orthodox and Catholics celebrated it in one day - April 20. Such calendar synchrony occurs very rarely because of the difference in the use of Julian and Gregorian calendars. This unique coincidence also touched on the celebration of the Trinity: both denominations will celebrate it in one day.
The Trinity is celebrated on the fifty day after Easter, so the date changes every year. In 2025, according to the new Julian calculus system, which was introduced by the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, the Trinity dates back to June 8.
On this day, Christians recall the Scripture event - the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of fiery tongues on the apostles, which was the beginning of active preaching of Christianity.
The Trinity is one of the most striking holidays of the Ukrainian calendar, rich in the symbolism of nature and spiritual renewal. Basic traditions include:
-
The consecration of greens - in churches bless the branches of trees, herbs and flowers, which then decorate the dwellings as a sign of God's blessing.
-
Weaving wreaths - young girls create wreaths of meadow plants that symbolize youth and fertility.
-
Departures in nature - families gather for picnics in the forest or near rivers, spend time together in fun games and entertainment.
-
Festive treats - traditional meat and milk dishes are served to the table, symbolizing the welfare and joy of life.
In Ukraine, this holiday is often called green holidays because of the combination of Christian and pagan traditions. It has long honored nature, its renewal and healing power of greens.
The adoption of Christianity these days had a period when nature blossomed. People honored the spirits of plants and water, believing in the charm of greens.
With the introduction of Christianity, the tradition of decorating the dwelling of greenery has acquired new content - it is a symbol of spiritual growth, peace and blessing that comes from God.
Ukrainian folk traditions have a number of prohibitions related to this day:
-
It is impossible to work physically - it is forbidden to mow, plant, wash, clean. This is a time for prayer, rest and spiritual purification.
-
It is impossible to break trees and shrubs, especially the willow - it is believed that the souls of the dead or the spirits of nature settle in the green.
-
Do not swim in open reservoirs - there is a belief that water is on this day, which can tighten a person.
-
Do not go to the forest unnecessarily - forests are considered especially "living" where spirits and mythical creatures can be.
-
Any negative emotions are also forbidden-a day of peace, love and unity with God and your neighbor.
