China plans to replace American lithium-ion batteries with new sodium-ion batteries

Chinese BYD is introducing new sodium-ion batteries that can compete with US lithium-ion batteries in the international market. According to Esocoticias, these batteries are marked by a significant margin, a faster charging time and a higher energy density.

Analysts emphasize that the potential of Chinese sodium-ion batteries is threatened with American manufacturers and exporters of lithium-ion batteries. China sees sodium in Ionia a strategic opportunity to increase its leadership in the field of battery technology and reduce dependence on import lithium.

BYD is already building in Chunincin, the world's first mass production plant with an annual 20 GW-hour capacity, which is planned in 2025, is being opened. The company also plans to use these batteries for electric transport and other applications.

Sodium-ion batteries use similar to lithium-ion intercalation chemistry, but sodium ions are used instead of lithium. This simplifies and reduces their production, as sodium is available in large quantities and does not require special storage conditions.

However, there are harassing views that China can use its state support to remove lithium-ion batteries from the market and replace them with their sodium-ion alternatives, which can impress American manufacturers.
