Presidents of Latin America will gather for an emergency summit on Thursday to discuss mass deportations of migrants from the United States, initiated by US President Donald Trump. This was reported by Financial Times on January 28.
The meeting was the initiator of Honduras Somar Castro, who is currently presiding in the Latin America and the Caribbean. The summit was organized at the request of President of Colombia Gustaso Peter. The participants of the event will discuss not only the migration crisis, but also the issues of ecology and regional unity.
Washington increases anxiety among Latin American embassies. One of the diplomats even compared the situation with the crisis of 1897, when the United States invaded Cuba and the Philippines.
Although most countries in the region are trying to avoid public applications to avoid diplomatic complications, governments coordinate their actions in closed discussions to achieve a common position.
Columbia, a traditional US ally in South America, is forced to take into account Washington's requirements because of its significant dependence on the US market. Meanwhile, President Trump is threatening economic sanctions: in particular, duties on Mexico products and increased control of the Panama Canal.
