On May 9, Prime Minister of Britain will announce the introduction of a new one in history, a package of sanctions against the Russian shadow fleet. This fleet, including the tankers used to bypass the sanctions on oil trading, actively supports the Russian economy, financing the aggressive war against Ukraine.
Sanctions that come into force will apply to more than 100 vessels that have been transporting Russian oil to more than $ 24 billion since the beginning of 2024. According to the British government, these measures are intended not only to increase the pressure on the Kremlin, but also to protect the critically important infrastructure of the United Kingdom and Europe.
"Every step we take to increase pressure on Russia and achieve a just and sustained peace in Ukraine is another step towards the security and prosperity of the United Kingdom," said Cyrus Starmer.
New sanctions are intended to stop the Kremlin's military action, as well as to strengthen the safety of energy and underwater infrastructure of the United Kingdom and Europe. It is also noted that the activity of the shadow fleet not only contributes to the financing of war in Ukraine, but also poses a serious threat to the ecology and security of the region.
“The threat of Britain's national security by Russia cannot be underestimated. That is why we will do everything in our power to destroy its "shadow fleet", to deprive it of the military machine of oil income and to protect the underwater infrastructure, "the Prime Minister added.
According to London estimates, since the introduction of Western sanctions in 2022, Russia's income from oil and gas has decreased by more than a third. At the same time, the Kremlin faces a sharp increase in defense costs, which threatens its economic stability.
