Increasing sea level poses a serious threat to the Maldives - the Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Currently, many local islands are already at an altitude less than a meter above sea level, and some of them have become unpromising about accessing drinking water.
However, the new President, Mohammed Musse, has abandoned the previous resettlement plans and offers a developed protection strategy. He proposed a plan of large -scale land reclamation and construction of the Higher Islands to reflect waves. However, in order to implement this ambitious project, he searches for 500 million euros of foreign financing.
Despite the President's positive mood, environmental and human rights groups are outrage, arguing that this approach can increase the risk of floods. Some coastal islands that are popular with tourists remain vulnerable to the threat of flooding.
Former President Mohammed Our Crafts had previously expressed fears that the Maldives could become global environmental refugees, and made plans for relocation to other countries, including India, Sri Lanka or Australia. However, now the authorities are choosing a more decisive way to fight the natural crisis, not to leave their historical lands.
