The Federal Government of Germany has appointed Ambassador to Martin Eger in Ukraine with a new head of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND). About it reports the German news service TageSsschau .
The decision was made by the Federal Cabinet of Ministers. Although the exact date of Eger's accession to the new position is still unknown, his candidacy has already been officially approved.
A 60-year diplomat is an experienced "crisis" specialist: he previously represented Germany in Afghanistan, Iraq and, since July 2023, in Ukraine. His diplomatic career covers the most complex regions of the world, which, according to experts, makes him an ideal candidate for foreign intelligence service.
The previous head of BND Bruno Kalun, who has been in office since 2016, will go to diplomatic work - he is appointed Ambassador of Germany in the Vatican.
The appointment of Eger is considered strategically important in the context of growing international challenges - in particular, Russia's wars against Ukraine, the crisis in the Middle East and the intensification of cybergrosis in Europe.
