MediaTek introduces a new processor for Android that will compete with Apple

MediaTek announced its new mobile processor — Dimensity 9400 , which will form the basis of future Android smartphones of the top segment and will compete with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Apple A18.

Dimensity 9400 is manufactured using a 3nm process and has impressive performance: it is 40% more powerful than its predecessor and 40% more energy efficient even under more intensive workloads. According to GSMArena, single-threaded performance increased by 35% and multi-threaded by 28%.

The chipset has a classic three-cluster architecture, which consists of one "big" Arm Cortex-X925 core operating at a frequency of 3.63 GHz, three Arm Cortex-X4 cores and four Arm Cortex-A720 cores, the frequencies of which have not yet been specified. Unlike Dimensity 9300, the novelty does not have energy-efficient cores, which indicates a focus on maximum performance.

Dimensity 9400 supports RAM of the LPDDR5X standard with a bandwidth of up to 10.7 GB/s, cameras up to 320 megapixels, displays with a WQHD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 180 Hz, and is also capable of recording video in 8K at 60 FPS. As befits a modern processor, there is a built-in 5G modem with a performance of up to 7 GB/s.

The first tests showed that the Dimensity 9400 outperforms all SoCs on the market in terms of performance and energy efficiency. The tests mentioned the yet-to-be-presented Oppo Find X8 Pro, which is likely to be the first model on Dimensity 9400, with a premiere expected before the end of the year.

However, according to insiders, the new processors, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Dimensity 9400, could be much more expensive than their predecessors. This, in turn, will lead to an increase in the price of Android flagships, as manufacturers usually pass on additional costs to the consumer.

At the end of October, Qualcomm plans to introduce the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It has been confirmed that the Xiaomi 15 will be the first smartphone on the market with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, as the Chinese manufacturer retains the exclusive rights to be the first to launch devices with the new processor.
