Mexico demands from Google to save the historical name of the Gulf of Mexico

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum has been criticized by Google by the decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America to Google Maps for users in the United States. This decision, she said, is a response to US President Donald Trump. This was reported on January 30 by Reuters.

Shaynbaum introduced an official letter addressed to Google, which stressed that the United States has no right to unilaterally change the name of an international water body that they jointly use with Mexico and Cuba.

"This change of the name can only apply to the US coast," she said, referring to the UN Convention on Maritime Law, which defines the boundaries of territorial waters.

The situation has caused a wave of discussions among international experts who emphasize that such unilateral actions can create a dangerous precedent in international relations.
