The International Ice Hockey Federation continued the suspension of teams from Russia and Belarus

At a meeting on February 12, the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) considered the possibility of returning national and club teams of Russia and Belarus to competitions. Due to the risks to the safety associated with this process, IIHF has decided to continue their removal for the next season.

According to IIHF, Russia and Belarus will not participate in the IIHF Championship in the 2024/2025 season, as well as in the final Olympic qualification round, which should take place in August 2024. The Federation noted that this decision is based on a careful analysis of the situation and assessment of risks for safety.

Decisions on the possible return of Russia and Belarus for the 2025/2026 IIHF season are planned in May 2025. The Federation noted that it would continue to monitor the situation and make decisions on the basis of topical circumstances.

Earlier, the International Olympic Committee decided to allow Russian and Belarussian athletes to the 2024 Olympics in neutral status. However, restrictions on the participation of athletes in team sports and individual athletes, which have some connections with military organizations or supported hostilities, were imposed.

This decision of the IOC provoked condemnation by some countries and politicians who called for the involvement of Russian and Belarussian athletes in the Olympics.
