The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (MES) plans to reform high school, which provides a change in the type of some educational institutions. According to the ministry, gymnasiums and elementary schools will not be closed, but will only be reorganized into new types of establishments that meet modern requirements.
In the press release, published on the official government portal, the Ministry of Education and Science draws attention to the dissemination of false information on the future reform of high school on social networks. The Office explains how the type of educational institutions will change in order to avoid misunderstandings among the public. According to the new plans, some high schools and elementary schools will be reorganized in the Lyceum for high school students, while other institutions will retain their status of gymnasium or elementary school. This means that the new lyceums will be taught mainly by high school students, and the gymnasiums will remain for high school and high school students. Primary schools will continue to function for young children. As an example, the Ministry of Education and Science cites the Sheptytsky community in Lviv, where the reorganization process is already being implemented. It is planned to create another academic lyceum, and most schools will be high schools for students of grades 1-9. Only one school will remain elementary for children of grades 1-4. At the same time, the community does not plan to close schools, but only change their types. The Ministry emphasizes that one of the key reform goals is to ensure the maximum proximity of elementary schools to students' residence. Thus, every child will be able to study at school near their home. The requirements for the minimum and maximum number of students in classes will remain unchanged. The minimum for elementary school is 5 students, a maximum of 24 students, for the basic school - 30 students. Reform also envisages extension for students to choose objects at their discretion. This will create more groups in schools and offer teachers full load, as well as teaching profile subjects and courses. "It is best if the lyceums are separated. After all, high school students need a different approach to learning, and organization methods, such as variable groups or studying subjects on a modular principle, will greatly facilitate this process," the Ministry of Education and Science said. If students are not able to continue their studies at their home institution, they will have two options. The first-if the school becomes a lyceum (mainly for students in grades 10-12), they will be able to move to another educational institution within their community. The second-if the school becomes high school (for students of grades 1-9), students will complete their studies for 9th grade in their home school, and then continue their studies at the lyceum or vocational school.
High school reform aims to improve the education system, making it more flexible and adapted to students. Improving the quality of learning, expanding opportunities for the choice of subjects and creating new types of educational institutions aims to prepare students for the realities of the modern world, where flexibility and specialization are important components of a successful career.
