Moscow does not want negotiations over the Vatican

Russian President Vladimir Putin does not consider the possibility of involving the Vatican in the peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine. Moscow abandons any initiatives related to the mediation of the Holy See, giving preference to technical negotiations that continue in Turkey.

About it reports Bloomberg with reference to sources in diplomatic circles.

Western leaders, including US President Donald Trump administration and the governments of the European Union, view the Vatican as one of the few neutral mediators capable of facilitating a meaningful dialogue between Kiev and Moscow. The initiative has received a new impetus after Trump's statements about the Pope's interest in the mediation role. This information was confirmed by the Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni.

Despite the support of the idea from the event, the Kremlin clearly made it clear that the Vatican's participation in the peace process is not considered. Moreover, Putin does not plan personal trips to the Vatican or any other country for negotiation. Russian officials insist on continuing the technical dialogue, which has already started in Istanbul, seeing in Turkey a convenient and acceptable partner.

Meanwhile, Western allies continue their diplomatic work with Kiev, seeking not only to preserve the negotiation process, but also to form its format that will avoid the dominance of rigid Russian negotiators, such as Vladimir Medinsky.

Despite the event of the event to provide a neutral platform, Russia's involvement in dialogue with the Vatican remains a big question. This position of the Kremlin once again demonstrates Moscow's unwillingness to seek compromises within the formats that it does not control.
