In Kiev, a young man tried to set fire to the flags installed in memory of the dead Ukrainian military on the Independence Square. The incident happened in the center of the capital, where the memorial perpetuates the memory of heroes who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of the country during the war with Russia.
According to Kyiv's report, the suspect poured flags with a combustible liquid from the bottle, trying to set them on fire. His actions were shot on the video, which he himself removed, trying to justify his actions with the lack of security at the object. It is interesting that because the fluid did not fire, the arson did not occur, but the very fact of this crime left a great resonance in society. During his deed, the man commented: "It is better to burn the box than the whole country," stating that in his opinion the Maidan and the elections will not change the situation. It is important that he turned to the topic of "people's power", expressing his support for the idea of action through "action" (program of e -government in Ukraine). These statements are of serious concern, since on the one hand they contain aggressive rhetoric on the people's memorial, on the other - emphasize attempts to justify criminal acts by political motives. Each of the Independence Square flags, which became the object of the attack, is of great importance for Ukrainians. These are not only symbols of memory, but also honoring the dead heroes who gave their lives, protecting Ukraine from Russian aggression. Such an attack on the memorial not only undermines national dignity, but also impresses that many symbols of this war are sacred for many.
The Shevchenkivsky Police Department registered this case and initiated an investigation. Police have already declared the seriousness of their actions and intention to hold the offender accountable for his act. At the same time, this incident becomes a signal to enhance public safety and the importance of protecting commemorative objects, especially in times when voltage in society can lead to such unacceptable acts of aggression.
Such incidents on the Independence Square confirm the importance of maintaining order and rest in society, and also testify how symbols of national unity can become objects of attacks for persons with radical views or political motives. Accordingly, it is necessary to strengthen the protection of such memorials and to prevent attempts to destroy the characters of memory of the dead heroes.
