NATO plans to create a new center for the Ukrainian military in order to strengthen defensive training and strategic management. This Center will expand the existing EU's educational mission and the programs provided by the Allies.
The main goal of the Center is to support Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia two years ago and to help it increase the level of defensive readiness in accordance with NATO standards to which it seeks to join.
This new step is a change in the NATO approach that has previously avoided actions that could be perceived by Russia as a threat. Previously, military assistance to Ukraine was carried out through lateral agreements between members of the Alliance or groups of countries. The new center reflects the change of this philosophy and a new stage of relations between NATO and Kiev.
It is planned that the Center's financing will be discussed between 31 Alliance members if it is made from a NATO or a separate fund. Diplomatic sources also state that the type of instructors who will work in the center will be discussed.
NATO defense ministers plan to finally reconcile the details of this project during a summit in Washington in July.
Recently, US ex-President Donald Trump has threatened NATO countries that did not fulfill the financial obligations to the Alliance, but received a negative response to these statements from the UK Foreign Minister David Kemeron.
