The Germans support the peacekeeping mission in Ukraine

More than half of Germany residents support the idea of sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine in the event of a truce with Russia. This is confirmed by a survey conducted at the end of December by the Yogov Sociological Service, DW reports on January 2.

According to the survey, 56% of respondents advocate peacekeepers. At the same time, only 23% of them support the participation of German servicemen as part of such forces. A third of the respondents spoke against the participation of the Bundesver, and almost every fifth (19%) in general opposes the departure of peacekeeping forces to Ukraine.

NATO is currently discussing the possibility of ceasing fire between Ukraine and Russia. However, experts estimate that there are no signs that hostilities may end in the near future.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz has opposed public discussions about peacekeeping forces, emphasizing the sensitivity of this issue. The German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius noted before Christmas that the issue of the departure of peacekeepers can only be arose after determining the clear parameters of the truce. Pistorius also stressed that Germany, as the largest NATO member in Europe and the first economy of the continent, "will not be able to stay away".

Earlier it was reported that Germany is ready to send its peacekeepers to Ukraine, but only if Russia agrees to such a mission. This testifies to Berlin's cautious approach to military support and diplomatic initiatives in the context of war in Ukraine.
