Germany has extended the term of stay of Ukrainian refugees until 2026

Ukrainian refugees in Germany will be able to use the status of temporary protection until March 4, 2026. This became possible thanks to a new draft law developed by the German government, which plans to extend the possibility of entry and stay for Ukrainians seeking asylum due to the war. The corresponding law is based on the decision of the Council of the EU, adopted in the summer of 2024, and amends the current resolution on Ukrainian refugees.

According to the draft law, which has the number 518/24 and is currently under consideration in the Bundestag, Ukrainian citizens will be able to:

  • Enter Germany by December 4, 2025 to apply for temporary protection.
  • Obtain the status of temporary protection with the possibility of staying in the country until March 2026, which will give the right to legal employment and the possibility of long-term integration into the labor market.
  • Expect changes in the legal status after the adoption of the bill by the Bundestag and its signing by the federal president.

During the discussions of the International Summit of Cities and Regions, Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishyna noted that the European Commission and Ukraine agreed to review the status of temporary protection of Ukrainian citizens, depending on the improvement of the security situation in Ukraine.
