The assistance from the US, which has already been voted by the Senate, came across a new obstacle - the speaker of the US Mike Johnson, who opposed the allocation of assistance, has announced a break in the work of the House by the end of February.
All votes in the House of Representatives have been canceled on Friday, and the members of the House will return to work only from February 28, which postpones the long -awaited vote for the decision to continue Ukraine's support for at least two weeks.
"Instead of stopping politicize issues that depends on the security of the state, Speaker Johnson sends a ward on a early, undeserved break, and thus exacerbates the killing military efforts of Russia and the Iranian regime at the US National Security, our jobs and the closest allies," the Whiteu representative was indignant.
Johnson in response criticized the White House with the mouth of the Prescretic of the House of Representatives, noting that at his request to meet with President Biden disagreed.
It is unknown whether enough Republicans will agree in the House of Representatives to support the project after his approval in the Senate. But some of them are already publicly pressed on the speaker of the House of Mike Johnson, demanding the approval of the document. I would like to remind you that it is about $ 61 billion for Ukraine to support its efforts to confront the aggression of the Russian Federation, $ 14 billion for Israel in his war against Hamas and another $ 4.83 billion to support partners in the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan, and restraining aggression from China.
The US Congress, meanwhile, discuss at least two "plans" to approve of assistance to Ukraine. The most optimal option is to use Discharge Petition - a procedure that allows you to take a question to the vote by bypassing committees and speaker.
In order to use Discharge Petition, it is necessary to collect signatures of a simple majority of members of the House of Representatives, ie 218. Democrats already have a petition with 213 signatures, which they prepared last year during discussions to increase the US government debt ceiling.
The new member of the Chamber of Democrats Tom Suzzi (elected after the exclusion from the House of Republican George Santos) will probably also be signed. But several progressor democrats can withdraw their signatures because they oppose Israel's military assistance.
Therefore, in order to success Discharge, Democrats in the Lower House of Congress need to enlist the support of several Republicans. For them, it is a political risk as they openly oppose their leadership. Currently, only one Republican Greg Murphy has declared the opportunity to join the petition.
The second alternative to approval of assistance to Ukraine in Congress involves the adoption of an alternative bill that would contain measures for the security of the US border with Mexico and financing of Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan.
According to one of the initiators, the Republican Don Beacon, the cost of the package will be about $ 60 billion, of which about $ 40 billion will go to Ukraine. They believe that their bill is more likely to be adopted because it does not contain funds for humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in Gas.
I would like to remind you that in Ukraine it was stated that without funding the US will be able to hold the situation at the front and in the economy for about two months.
