The German airline Lufthansa plans to launch a new subsidiary called City Airlines, which will start operating medium range flights from Munich and Frankfurt airports, according to Avianews. The first flights are expected in the summer of 2024.
City Airlines will be intended for transportation of passengers to key airports, from where they will be able to move to far -off flights provided by Lufthansa.
The emergence of City Airlines may be related to Lufthansa attempts to reduce staff spending, although the company's official representatives do not make direct references to this fact. In recent years, Lufthansa has encountered a few strikes of crew members who required salaries.
However, passengers will be practically no noticeable between Lufthansa and City Airlines. Both airlines will use similar livorys on their planes, their crews will wear similar forms, and passengers will be able to book tickets at Lufthansa and receive a comparative level of service.
City Airlines fleet is expected to consist of Airbus A319 aircraft, which are also used by Lufthansa. The parent company plans to transfer some of these liners to the City Airlines fleet, as well as hire pilots and flight attendants with lower pay rates.
The new City Airlines unit is intended to strengthen Lufthansa competitiveness and offer more economically profitable flights, providing passengers with more accessible travel options.
