Pakistan accuses India of blocking the strategic river

India blocked the gateways on two dams, stopping the flow of the Dzhab River, which supplies water to the Pakistani province of Punjab. This decision has caused serious concern in Islamabad, which declares a violation of the international water treaty.

About it reports The Times of India on Tuesday, May 6.

According to the report, the Indian authorities closed all the gateways on the Baglihar and Salal in the union of Jamma and Kashmir. As a result, the volume of water coming to Pakistan has fallen almost ten. The water level in Zoabi decreased to unprecedented low rates, and the locals were first able to cross the river on foot.

Representatives of the Pakistani Department of Irrigation stated that this violates the terms of the Indus Water Agreement concluded between India and Pakistan through the World Bank in 1960. Under the terms of the agreement, India is entitled to the limited use of the waters of the Dzhab River, but cannot completely block its flow.

"India has actually blocked the River in Pakistan. They use water for their reservoirs and hydroelectrics, which is a gross violation of the international treaty," - said a high -ranking official from the Punjab Irrigation Department.

According to him, the waters of Zinaba are critically important for irrigation of agricultural lands of the province. The official also warned that in the case of sudden discharge of water from India, there is a threat of large -scale flood in the lower reaches of the river.

So far, the official authorities of India have not provided public comments on the situation. However, experts believe that such a step may be associated with the aggravation of relations between two nuclear powers that have long had a complex history of disputes, in particular through Kashmir.
