On Wednesday, February 12, the Parliament of Greece elected a new president of the country. He became a representative of the ruling conservative party New Democracy, a former speaker of Parliament Constantinos Tasulas. This was reported by Kathimerini.
Tasuula received 160 votes in a 300-seater parliament, where 276 deputies took part in the vote. In the third round of elections to win, at least 151 votes were required.
To date, the New Democracy Party has 156 parliamentary seats, which gave its candidate a significant advantage during voting.
The inauguration ceremony of the newly elected President is scheduled for March 13 - on the day when the term of office of the current head of state Catherine Sakellaropula is expired.
The President in Greece is elected by Parliament for five years, and his role is mostly ceremonial.
