Armenia Parliament has passed a law on the beginning of the EU accession process

On March 26, 2025, the Armenian Parliament adopted an important bill that officially announces the beginning of the country's accession to the European Union. This solution has become an important stage in the process of European integration of Armenia, which seeks to develop democratic institutions, strengthen the economy and ensure security and stability in the country. The bill received support for 64 deputies, while 7 voted against.

According to the bill, Armenia seeks to become part of the European Union, pointing to the importance of the development of democratic institutions, improving the well -being of the population, strengthening national security, stability of society and the rule of law. An important aspect is the country's desire to improve the level of social standards and human rights, adhering to European values and standards.

The law clearly stipulates that access to the EU should be the basis for the further development of the country, including economic stability and improvement of citizens' lives. In addition, the law aims to significantly strengthen Armenia's relations with the European Union and improve the political situation, contributing to the development of institutions that are the basis for integration into European structures.

The process of passing the law did not do without controversy in the Armenian Parliament. The opposition factions of "Ayastan" and "Honor" have opposed the initiative, emphasizing that the process of joining the EU requires significant changes in the country's domestic policy and economy, and may not be the best direction for Armenia. The Ayastan faction even refused to vote, while I have a "honor" voted strongly against.

These reactions emphasize internal political differences as to how integration with the EU is in line with the national interests of Armenia. However, the support of 64 deputies indicates that a large part of Armenia politicians and citizens see the path to modernizing the country and improving its international status in their accession to the EU.

The process of admission to the EU is complex and prolonged, requiring the fulfillment of numerous conditions and reforms in various fields: from economy to human rights. Armenia must demonstrate real progress in these areas to meet the EU standards.

It is expected that Armenia's accession to the European Union will allow the country:

  1. Get support in economic development. The EU will provide investment, infrastructure development and improve economic conditions for businesses and citizens.

  2. Strengthen political institutions. Changes in the authorities and the development of the legal system in accordance with European standards will contribute to stability and fairness in the country.

  3. Improve social living conditions. Introduction to the EU will mean the introduction of European standards in the field of education, health and social protection, which will have a positive effect on the living standards of citizens.

  4. To develop democratic institutions. Democratic processes, human rights and freedom of speech, as well as improving electoral procedures are key conditions for Armenia's integration into the EU.
