Paris Deputy Mayor David Beliard announced a new plan that envisages the city transformation into pedestrians by 2030. This plan is a logical extension of the strategy that has already been implemented from 2017 to 2022.
According to new measures, 100 hectares of pedestrian zones will be created in Paris, as well as more than 100 "children's streets" near educational institutions, which will be temporarily covered at the beginning and end of the school day. The plan also envisages pedestrian 12 kilometers of alleys of boulevards and avenues that were previously used as parking areas.
By 2026, the Paris Municipality undertakes:
- Make pedestrian 100 streets near schools, universities and government agencies for children and students.
- Create 50 new streets with landscaping, fountains, benches and colored markings for children.
- Introduce the Vision Zero concept to reduce fatal road accidents.
- Increase pedestrian safety by limiting the movement of vehicles in the city center and reducing its flow.
- Create additional pedestrian crossings and take into account the needs of the elderly when regulating the transition time.
- Increase the number of quiet and comfortable recreation areas in public, expand the network of fountains with drinking water and public toilets, as well as make more "shadow structures".
- Reduce noise on the roads.
According to the data, 65% of travel in Paris are on foot, and during 2010-2020 the number of hiking increased by 12%. Paris Plan: Priority Pedestrians! With the planned investments of 300 million euros is recognized as a key tool for the city's adaptation to climate change, the municipality representatives indicate.
