Armenian Prime Minister Nicol Pashinyan made a historic first visit to Turkey, where he negotiated with President Recep Taiip Erdogan on June 20. This was reported in the Directorate for Communications of the President of Turkey.
Pashinyan and Erdogan discussed contacts between the two countries, the peace process and the dialogue in the South Caucasus, as well as current regional events. The Turkish President emphasized the importance of consensus achieved during peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The parties also discussed possible steps in the process of normalizing the relationship between Turkey and Armenia. This visit was the first such meeting at the level of the head of the Armenian government in Turkey.
It is worth noting that the history of the relations of Turkey and Armenia has a complex context through the genocide of the Armenian minority in the Ottoman Empire in 1915. In addition, Armenia is traditionally in the sphere of influence of Russia, while Azerbaijan maintains closer ties with Turkey.
